Dado Trunking: Choosing Compartments for Power and Data

Published by Budgie · 11 October 2026

A dado trunking layout needs a cable schedule and outlet plan before a compartment count. Three or four compartments can organise separate routes, but the number alone does not establish the required electrical separation.

Start with circuit groups

Identify power, communications and control circuits. Record cable types, quantities, diameters and the separation requirements from the project design. Confirm whether the partitions and accessories provide the separation required by the installation rules; a visible divider is not a universal compliance guarantee.

Compare space per compartment

Request a cross-section drawing showing the internal dimensions of each channel, divider positions and mounting features. Do not divide the external width equally and assume each channel has that much usable space. Outlet boxes can consume space or change cable routing within the profile.

Design corners and outlets together

Mark desks, teaching stations, work surfaces and service points on the room plan. Check that bends, tees and junction fittings maintain the intended routes. Verify the cover, faceplate, outlet box and accessory compatibility with the chosen dado series.

Three compartments or four?

Compare the three-compartment option when the circuit grouping and available space fit its drawing. Consider a four-compartment option when the designer needs another separate route or a different layout. More compartments can reduce the space in an individual channel, so compare the actual geometry and fitting system.

Leave a maintenance plan

Record the purpose of each channel, keep access points identifiable and retain the approved layout. Plan additions around the cable schedule and available space. Review the cable manufacturer’s bend requirements and the electrical designer’s installation instructions before changing a route.

A partition can support a separation design, but it does not by itself certify EMC performance, a medical installation or a particular project’s electrical compliance.
