PVC Trunking vs Conduit: Which Route Fits Your Project?
PVC trunking and PVC conduit both manage cable routes, but they give installers different ways to build and access the system. Choose around the route and its future use, rather than material alone.
Compare the access you need
Trunking commonly uses a removable cover, giving access along a surface route. Conduit normally forms a tubular route with access at planned boxes and ends. If an office layout changes frequently, access along the route may be useful. If a drawing specifies a conduit system, confirm the conduit classification and fittings before substituting another system.
| Selection question | Trunking | Conduit |
|---|---|---|
| How will cables be added? | Check cover access and compartment capacity. | Check pulling access, bends and boxes. |
| Are outlets part of the route? | Confirm compatible mounting boxes and covers. | Plan boxes, entries and connection fittings. |
| What does the route look like? | Confirm corners, tees and profile joints. | Compare rigid and flexible sections with matching fittings. |
Check the environment separately
Neither the word PVC nor the system type establishes an outdoor rating, impact classification, ingress protection or fire performance. Request evidence for the exact product and assembled system. Exposure to sunlight, moisture, temperature or chemicals can change the selection.
Keep system standards distinct
IEC 61084 covers cable trunking and ducting systems; IEC 61386 covers conduit systems, including conduit and fittings. A document for one product family is not proof that another family meets the project’s requirements. Ask which standard, edition and test scope apply to the proposed item.
Build the bill of materials
List straight lengths, corners or bends, tees, couplers, boxes, fixing devices and spare parts. Check compatibility at transitions. Compare the complete route and maintenance plan, rather than only the price per metre of straight material.
For a quote, share the route drawing, cable schedule, installation environment and required product classification. Where the specification is uncertain, have the project designer confirm the system before purchase.
